Did you know that herbs can be beneficial both in and around your coops?
You can easily improve your chooks health, naturally. By scattering beneficial herbs in your coop and nesting boxes to help repel insects and parasites, or feeding them fresh to your chickens. You could even dry them and add them to their feed.
🌿 Lavender is great to sprinkle through your nesting boxes, either dried or fresh. Lavender is an aromatic stress reliever (great for brooding ladies!), and can also increase blood circulation and act as an insecticide.
🌿 Mint is beautiful and aromatic. A great addition to any dish, but in the chicken coop it can deter flies! It is also claimed by some, to deter rodents. Definitely worth a try, I reckon!
🌿 Parsley is a nutritional powerhouse and contains vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, as well as calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, and zinc. It aids in blood-vessel development and also stimulates egg-laying.
🌿 Thyme is used to boost the respiratory health of your flock. It also acts as an antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-parasitic herb. So versatile. Feed fresh, dry, or sprinkle through nesting boxes to help deter mites.
🌿 Oregano is thought to be a natural antibiotic and help combat diseases in your chooks such as coccidiosis, E-coli, bronchitis, and salmonella. Also packed with vitamins, including E and K, plus calcium and antioxidants to naturally boost their immune system.
🌿 Anise is known to enhance reproductive health in chickens, and so is an incredibly powerful laying stimulant for your girls. It is also sighted to increase the condition of your chooks, and improve their digestive health.
🌿 Basil aids by supporting the immune system. It is a good source of protein and contains Vitamin K and iron. It also benefits circulatory and mucus membrane health – which is really important in your flock since chickens are so very susceptible to respiratory issues.
🌿 Borage is a highly nutritious treat for your chooks. It contains high amounts of vitamins A and C and beta-carotene for bright yellow egg yolks. Also high in calcium for nice strong shells, and Omega-6s which provide immune system support. Borage is also great to attract bees to your garden! Not only that, but your chooks will go crazy for borage, it is definitely a favourite!
🌿 Dill is well known for increasing your flock’s respiratory health and being a powerful antioxidant. But, it also contains phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium. All of these minerals are great for bone health, and laying hens rely on a daily intake of calcium to produce healthy eggs.
