This is great. I bought 2, one for each coop. I feel better when they have to be inside, to give them something fun and healthy to do. Sometimes I move it outside too.
So far, I have used: peeled apple, peeled cucumber put on lengthwise, even carrot! they have really liked them all. Even younger chickens got the hang of it. I can see this is a great way to use up the apple cores that children can sometimes leave too much apple on, older cucumbers or corn cobs from the fridge, and carrot ends, tomato, etc. (I did score the outside of the carrot to make it easier for them to peck). They really enjoy this.
I found attaching to the side of the coop was way better than hanging it from the middle (it scared them to see it move around when they pecked it that way). I also held it steady with the food on it, for them to peck, to help them get used to it, and that worked really well to help them realise what it was all about and how to eat from it.
Mine is silver, which I prefer. I hang it from a little piece of bent wire on the side of the coop.
