How Does the Rollaway Nesting Box Work?

When a hen lays an egg, the sloped base allows it to roll gently towards the front of the box and into the protected collection area.

The egg is separated from the hen and the main laying space, helping to keep it clean and intact until you are ready to collect it.

For the rollaway function to work correctly, the box must be assembled and mounted according to the supplied instructions. Avoid adding loose bedding that may prevent eggs from rolling freely into the collection tray.

Why choose a rollaway nesting box?

Traditional nesting boxes leave freshly laid eggs sitting beneath the hen, where they can become dirty, cracked or pecked. With this rollaway design, eggs move into the front collection tray shortly after being laid.

This helps you collect eggs that are:

The body and roof are made from galvanised steel for strength and reliable everyday use inside the chicken coop. Unlike timber nesting boxes, the smooth metal surfaces do not contain cracks where moisture, mites and other parasites can easily hide.

The dark green sloped roof also helps discourage hens from sitting or sleeping on top of the nesting box.

Removable ventilated tray

The black polypropylene plastic nesting tray features ventilation openings that encourage airflow through the nesting area. The smooth plastic construction is easy to remove, rinse and dry whenever the box needs cleaning.

Only use a light layer of suitable nesting material so that eggs can continue to roll freely into the collection area.

Easy front egg collection

The rollaway collection tray is positioned at the front of the box, allowing you to gather eggs without searching through bedding or reaching underneath a hen.

The protective green cover helps keep the collected eggs separated from the nesting area until you are ready to collect them.

Installation and setup

Choose a quiet, shaded and protected position inside the chicken coop. Secure the nesting box to a strong, level surface and check that it remains stable.

Keeping the box level is important because the rollaway system depends on the tray’s designed slope to move eggs gently into the front collection area.

Introduce the new nesting box with a clean nesting liner or a very light layer of bedding. A ceramic or imitation egg can also help encourage hesitant hens to investigate their new laying space.

Cleaning and care

1. Remove the plastic nesting tray.
2. Shake out loose feathers, bedding and debris.
3. Rinse the tray using warm water and a mild animal-safe cleaner.
4. Wipe the galvanised steel surfaces with a damp cloth.
5. Allow every component to dry completely before reassembly.
6. Avoid abrasive scourers, harsh chemicals and high-pressure cleaning.
7. Check the mounting hardware regularly and tighten it when required.
