A Natural Way to Keep Chicks Warm

In nature, newly hatched chicks instinctively shelter beneath their mother’s feathers whenever they need warmth. When raising chicks without a broody hen, providing a dependable heat source is essential during their first weeks of life.

A chicken heat brooder plate recreates this natural experience by providing gentle warmth from its heated underside. Chicks can move beneath the plate when they feel cold and step out to eat, drink and explore when they are comfortable.

Unlike traditional heat lamps, a chick brooder heating plate does not heat the entire brooder or produce bright light throughout the night. This allows chicks to regulate their own comfort and settle into a more natural day-and-night routine.

25 cm Chicken Heat Brooder Plate

Suitable for approximately 15–20 chicks, depending on their breed, age and size. This compact plate is a practical choice for smaller backyard hatches and brooder setups.

30 cm Chicken Heat Brooder Plate

Suitable for approximately 20–25 chicks, depending on their breed, age and size. It provides additional space for medium-sized groups of young chicks.

40 cm Chicken Heat Brooder Plate

Suitable for approximately 25–30 chicks, depending on their breed, age and size. Choose this larger plate for bigger hatches or when you would like more room beneath the heating surface.

Capacity will decrease as chicks grow. Always ensure every chick can comfortably reach the heated underside without crowding, piling or being pushed out.

How to Position the Brooder Plate

Place the heat plate inside a clean, dry and draught-free brooder. Set it low enough for the chicks to lightly touch the warm underside with their backs while standing naturally.

The plate should not press down on the chicks or prevent them from moving underneath it freely. Many poultry keepers position one side slightly lower than the other, creating different height options for smaller and taller chicks.

Check the height regularly and raise the plate gradually as the chicks grow.

How Long Do Chicks Need a Heat Plate?

Chicks generally require supplementary warmth for approximately four to eight weeks. The exact duration will depend on:

• Breed and growth rate
• Feather development
• Brooder location
• Daytime and overnight temperatures
• Chick behaviour

As the chicks grow and develop their feathers, they will naturally spend less time beneath the plate. Their behaviour and the surrounding temperature are better guides than age alone.

Optional Accessories

A rheostat-controlled temperature regulator is available separately, allowing greater control over the plate’s operating temperature.

A clear domed plastic cover is also available separately. The cover discourages chicks from climbing onto the heating plate, helping keep its surface cleaner and more hygienic.

Chicken Heat Brooder Plate or Heat Lamp?

Traditional heat lamps produce intense heat and often remain illuminated throughout the day and night. Their exposed bulbs can also present a fire risk if the lamp is damaged, incorrectly secured or positioned too close to bedding.

A chicken heat brooder plate has no exposed hot bulb and uses considerably less electricity. It warms the sheltered space immediately beneath the plate while leaving the rest of the brooder cooler. This allows chicks to choose when they need warmth rather than remaining under constant heat.

Important Safety Information

Always install and operate your chick brooder heating plate according to the supplied instructions. Keep the plate, electrical cord and plug dry and away from waterers or other sources of moisture.

Do not cover the plate while it is operating. Inspect the electrical cord regularly and discontinue use if the plate, plug or cord becomes damaged.
