About Nesting Material:
The primary purpose of nest box material is to protect the eggs from breaking and facilitate cleaning. Because hens squat when laying, the nest box needs cushioning to prevent breakages when the egg drops from the vent. Hens seem to enjoy scratching out organic materials from nesting boxes, but this exposes the hard floor and does not protect the egg. Plastic nesting mats cannot be easily kicked out of the nest, protect the eggs from breaking, and are easy to clean and reinstate if soiled. Chicken owners mistakenly believe they are providing a comfortable seat, but you should not be providing a cosy sanctuary as you are not encouraging broody hens. With organic materials, the warmth and humidity from a hen’s body can hasten decomposition and encourage mould growth.

My hens only took 2 days to get into the groove with these. I added straw to tempt them and a fake egg. They actually prefer them over the 2 straw only nest boxes now! Didn’t take long. Cushy and comfy- helps protect the eggs! I wish I bought double the number (4 not 2)!

Would be good if didn’t need to cut the liner to fit the nest box. Easy to wash and keep clean.
